Medical errors ‘claim 11 lives a month’ in KSA
In a startling revelation, forensic medicine departments of the Kingdom said there were 137 deaths in 2014 due to medical errors in addition to cases of disability, according to an online newspaper.
It said 11 people on average die due to medical mistakes every month.
Reports said that 44 percent of deaths caused by medical errors were investigated by forensic departments in various regions.
There were 58 cases in Riyadh, 46 in the Eastern Province, 43 in Jeddah, 31 in Madinah, while in Jazan there were only three deaths due to medical mistakes.
The newspaper, citing unnamed sources, said most of the mistakes were committed by nurses, because the doctors were not given correct information and there was no proper follow-up of the cases.
A whopping 100 deaths took place because of doctors’ negligence during follow-up treatment including surgery. There were 50 percent chances of medical mistakes due to lack of experience of a doctor, the report claimed.
