Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has urged Muslims to take care of the poor as well as refugees.

During his weekly radio program, Al-Asheikh, also the president of the Council of Senior Ulema, appealed to fellow Muslims on behalf of the poor and the needy who have been displaced by war.

“They need a roof over their heads, clothes to warm themselves due to the cold weather that has set in, water to quench their thirst and food to satisfy their hunger,” he said.

He said that many had been displaced by the wars in Syria, Iraq and Yemen and that even if they don’t say so “we know what they want and how they feel.”

“They are our brother Muslims who want to meet their basic needs. So let’s share whatever we can. If they aren’t able to reciprocate, God will bless us in return,” he said.

He added: “Let us be imbued with a humanitarian spirit. Let pity and compassion reign in our hearts and minds. Let’s extend a helping hand to brother Muslims who are refugees from Syria, Iraq and Yemen,” the grand mufti said.

He added: “Aside from basic needs, their children need to go to school, which is a basic right, so that they could carve out a better future for themselves after finishing their studies.”

He said the children would need many things for school and “we should lift a finger in whatever way we can to help so that they may realize their dreams and ambitions.”

“Let us be compassionate. They will be here for some time. They won’t be able to leave soon since it will take several years to rebuild their houses, if ever they go back to their homes,” he said.

To reinforce his appeal, he noted the damaged buildings in Syria, abandoned houses in Iraq and deserted streets and communities in Yemen in the wake of the wars in those countries.
