The Executive Committee of the Municipal Elections has appointed 837 controllers and 708 inspectors to monitor the Dec. 12 elections.

Judea Al-Qahtani, head of the committee and spokesman for the elections, was quoted as saying in a press report that local committees must have controllers making daily and unscheduled visits to areas where candidates are conducting their campaigns.

The controllers must ensure that everyone has the required licenses. If there are violations, these are referred to the local committees, which have to refer them to the violation inspectors.

Al-Qahtani called on all candidates to not make promises that fall outside the powers and jurisdiction of council members. Among the 6,917 candidates, 979 are women.

Meanwhile, according to a report in a local publication, many candidates are afraid their campaigns might be disrupted by bad weather.

The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) has warned of potential thunderstorms and heavy rain over the next week.

Candidates started campaigning on Sunday and have only until next Thursday, Dec. 10 to campaign for the Dec. 12 polls. Many have asked if the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs would allow them more time to campaign if there is bad weather, or if it would postpone the elections if voting day is also affected. They said the ministry must coordinate all its actions with the PME and elections committee if there is bad weather this coming week.

Meanwhile, candidates have praised the Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Head of the General Committee for Municipal Elections Abdul Latif Al-Asheikh and other officials for organizing the polls.

Over 1.48 million men and women are registered to vote in the elections this year. There are 1.35 million men and 130,637 women voters. There would be 548,945 new men and women voters, with men making up 418,380.

A total of 277,761 men and women were found ineligible, including 51,230 soldiers. Military personnel are not allowed to vote.
