Councilors could face law suits if they fail to fulfill poll promises
A number of citizens in the Eastern Province said that they will take members of the new local councils to court if they don’t keep the promises they made during their local elections campaigns, warning that these promises are documented in videos and the publications of the contenders, and thus will not be easily forgotten.
Residents Abdullah Al-Qurashi, Khaled Al-Ghamdi and Mohmmad bin Mamdouh said on the topic: “We heard many things during the campaigns, but its going to be different this time if they don’t carry out their promises.”
Many of the contenders promised a lot during the last local election campaigns about improving services and personally checking in on roads, neighborhoods, construction projects and other initiatives that are in need of attention or which are stalled entirely. In all honesty, if these promises are not kept, “we will take them to court because we have them on record as saying these things,” Al-Qurashi said.
Many other residents seem to share the same view. Ahmed Al-Subei said that he expects the elected individuals to stay true to their words. “I gave my vote to one of the contenders in the Dhahran district. I looked at this candidate’s program and felt like it was a good one given his promises of services for people in cooperation with the municipality. But I will go to the courts if these promises are not kept,” he said.
“This is the first simple rights of citizens with regard to electoral contenders, and we demand that they live up to their promises. I call on them to present a plan to the municipality to find solutions to the existing problems in neighborhoods including bad services, cleanliness and other responsibilities,” he added.
Al-Subei noted that the new council members have had a lot of trust invested in them by citizens, and must use their new positions for the benefit of citizens by monitoring the councils and municipalities and coming up with solutions to problems like traffic congestions, inadequate services and the cleaning up of neighborhoods.
