Azerbaijan and Tajikistan are considering joining the 34-nation Saudi-led alliance against global terrorism.

Speaking to Arab News on Monday, Rasim Rzayev, Azerbaijan’s ambassador in Riyadh, confirmed that his country is considering a proposal by the Kingdom to join the group.

Hikmat Hajiyev, spokesman at the foreign ministry in Azerbaijan, was quoted as saying last Tuesday that Azerbaijan has also been a victim of terror activities, and had condemned all forms of extremism.

Hajiyev had told reporters that internal procedures were underway to consider the proposal, which would have to comply with the country’s laws.

He said Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov had discussed the issue with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir over the telephone.

According to the Tajikistan Embassy here, President Emomali Rahmon is scheduled to visit Riyadh early next month, when he will hold talks with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman on countering terrorism, including Tajikistan’s participation in the 34-nation anti-terror alliance.
