A video clip of the man standing on the wall of the graveyard in Makkah on Friday.

A man broke the peace and tranquility of the Jannatul Maala graveyard in Makkah after the Friday prayer.

According to a local newspaper, the man stood on the compound wall of the graveyard and raised slogans that he is the Mahdi.

Soon, people gathered at the spot and told him to come down, but he refused. He also damaged a security patrol car by throwing stones at it.

Later, security personnel climbed the wall and rounded him up and ordered an investigation into the incident.

Eyewitnesses were quoted as saying that the man appeared to be mentally ill.

News and video of the incident went viral on social media. Abu Hassan, who saw the video clip, said he is astonished and that the man is probably mentally ill. “He desecrated the peace and sanctity of the graveyard. May Allah protect us and help this man by curing his mental illness.”

Another citizen, Mohammed Al-Asmi, expressed alarm that such madness could happen in Makkah . “There are a lot of mentally infirm people; the authorities should take care of them. Why are they waiting for an incident or crime to happen? There must be ways to treat these people and prevent such incidents from happening,” he said.

Abu Abdulrahman, who visits his grandmother’s grave every time he goes to Makkah for the past three years, said it was shocking to see in the video the mad man standing on the wall of the graveyard and throwing stones at security men and others.

He said the graveyard has great significance as it has been there since the pre-Islamic era, and includes the graves of Bani Hashim, Prophet Muhammed’s (peace be upon him) family, his wife, his uncles and some of the companions.
