Who was Fares Al-Shuwail?
Among those executed was Fares Al-Shuwail, nicknamed Abu Jundul Al-Azdi, who undertook the theoretical responsibility of defending Al-Qaeda, issuing studies and research supportive to its operations.
He was arrested in August 2004 in the Abu Khayal mountain area, near Miftaha Theatre, a famous place of the summer tourist season in Abha, southern Saudi Arabia.
His arrest came few days following the arrest of the key religious theoretician Eisa Al-Awaishin. With the arrest of Fares Al-Shuwail, Al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia suffered a severe blow.
The importance of Fares Al-Shuwail lies in his strict commitment to Al-Qaeda operations and devotion to “theoretical resistance” against Al-Qaeda’s opponents of religious scholars. He disclosed that he used to use another name to publish his studies instead of his real name after being put on the list of wanted persons.
