Anyone found crossing the northern border, including shepherds, would be jailed for 30 months and fined SR25,000, according to the Border Guard in the Eastern Province.

Capt. Omar bin Mohammed Al-Aklabi, spokesman for the Border Guard, said that some people had been arrested in Hafr Al-Batin for crossing the border. It appeared they were looking for truffles. However, they still face fines and imprisonment.

He said there is a 24-kilometer zone where no one is allowed, only personnel authorized by the Saudi government. He warned citizens and expatriates to check where they are traveling and ensure they stay out of these areas for their own protection, according to a report in a local publication on Tuesday.
