Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal has ordered that young men should be allowed to enter shopping malls and markets.

The order came as the Hayya Jeddah shopping and Jeddah Heritage festivals started in the city as the schools closed down for spring break. However, Prince Khaled said security companies must provide proper enforcement and prevent any harassment of shoppers.

There was a ban on young boys entering shopping malls and markets especially on weekends to prevent the harassment of families. Many times these boys would ask unrelated females to accompany them so that they could enter the malls.

Even shop owners at malls have been urging the authorities to lift the ban on single men at weekends because it was hurting their businesses, particularly those selling clothing. Men often only have time off work at weekends to shop, they said.

Many young men in recent times have complained that they are being unfairly treated and are not responsible for harassing young women or families, and want to be treated as part of society.

According to psychologists, men have been experiencing feelings of rejection because of the ban. They believe that treating single men in this way creates several problems and is the main cause of anti-social behavior.
