Pakistan’s National Security Advisor Sartaj Aziz (R) shakes hands with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir before their meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad on Thursday.

Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir on Thursday arrived in Islamabad on a two-day visit to Pakistan to boost bilateral cooperation including combating terrorism.

“On arrival in the Pakistani capital, the minister was received at the Noor Khan airbase by Sartaj Aziz, adviser on foreign affairs to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif,” said Sardar Muhammad Khattak, head of chancery here at the Pakistan Embassy.

Expressing regret on his inability to comment on the agenda of the meeting, he said that a press conference in Islamabad will later announce details of the visit.

Sources, however, said that Al-Jubeir’s visit assumes greater significance in the wake of Iranian meddling in Arab affairs and announcement of a Saudi-led 35-country coalition to combat terrorism for which Pakistan has announced its participation.

According to sources, Al-Jubeir, during the visit, will meet the Pakistani prime minister, his adviser on foreign affairs and other senior officials to discuss details of the 35-nation alliance and Pakistan’s role in the significant coalition against terrorism.

The Saudi minister will also have talks with the Pakistani leadership on different aspects of bilateral cooperation and discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Al-Jubeir will chair an extraordinary meeting of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers in Riyadh on Saturday to address concerns over attacks on the Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran.

Earlier, the foreign minister was scheduled to visit Pakistan on Jan. 3 but it was postponed after Iranian meddling and violent mob attack on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and the consulate in Mashhad.

The Pakistani foreign ministry has condemned the attacks saying his country deeply regrets the assaults on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, stressing that host countries are responsible for providing full protection for diplomatic missions on its territory.
