4 hospitals banned from organ transplants

Saudi-Center-for-Organ-Transplantation

The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation has banned four public and private hospitals from performing organ transplant operations because of absence of required evaluation criteria for surgeries at the hospitals.

“The center has allowed four other hospitals to perform transplants they fulfilled the criteria,” Dr. Faisal Abdulraheem Shaheen, head of the center, was quoted by local media as saying on Sunday.

Shaheen said the center gives permits to hospitals and transplant centers for conducting organ transplants after making sure that all the conditions are met.

He said there are 23 transplant centers in government and private hospitals — four are for kidney transplants — four for liver, two each for lungs and heart and two for pancreas.

Shaheen said the Kingdom has made distinguished strides in these areas, bringing it on a par with advanced countries in the field of saving kidney failure patients.

Three million individuals in Saudi Arabia have registered with a “volunteer card” to help victims, he added.
