4,000 workers detained in EP last year
An official at the Ministry of Labor said more than 4,000 workers in violation of labor and residency laws were detained and more than 16,000 violations recorded in the Eastern Province last year.
The official, who preferred anonymity, said the field inspection tours conducted by the ministry’s branch in the Eastern Province, in cooperation with law enforcement agencies, apprehended more than 4,000 violators, of whom about 80 percent were of Indian, Pakistani and Egyptian nationalities, and the remainder of Arab and Asian nationalities.
He sais that 90 percent of the violators breached Article 39 of the system which prevents working for a third party, followed by working without work permits, violations involving the feminization of women’s shops and other violations.
He said more than 70 workers were apprehended on a daily basis in Dammam, Alkhobar and Dhahran from the construction sector and factories. The least number of violators was found in Ras Tanura, Abqaiq and nearby areas.
He added that the construction sector led in terms of violations, while the health sector registered the least number of violations, followed by educational establishments.
