Houthi horror: Teachers tortured, served food in waste container
Houthis can cross all limits when it comes to violation of human rights. This is evident from the tale of horror narrated by the two Saudi teachers who were held captive for almost 10 months by the terrorists in Yemen.
“It was a 2X3 square-meter room and we were kept there with American, Ugandan and Ethiopian hostages. Some of the inhuman acts the Houthi militants committed were offering us food in the container used for garbage,” Abdulrahman Al-Sharari, one of the teachers told local media.
Al-Sharari and the other Saudi teacher, Salem Al-Ghamdi looked exhausted and weak when they arrived in Riyadh recently. They had been kidnapped in Sanaa in end-March, soon after Operation Decisive Storm was launched against the Houthis, and were released on Jan. 14.
“Although we repeatedly tried to explain to the Houthis when they broke into the Movenpick Sanaa hotel that we were heading to Moroni, Comoros for educational purpose, they did not listen and kept shouting at us that we were spies,” the two teachers said.
It was obviously a harrowing time in captivity as the two had to constantly face abuse and torture — physical and mental — by their kidnappers and always felt death was looming. Al-Sharari had even slipped into coma for two days after he was severely thrashed by the militants.
However, Al-Ghamdi and Al-Sharari said they never suspected for a moment throughout their detention period that the Saudi leadership would spare any efforts in securing their release, but were not quite sure about the kidnappers’ next move.
Al-Ghamdi was looked at with more suspicion by the militants probably because of his beard. Describing the eight minutes during which Al-Ghamdi was taken away, Al-Sharari said: “I was very worried because they called him by his name and took him away. But when he came back, he said he communicated with his family, which looked very strange.”
The two teachers said when the Houthis told them to move out of the room where they were being held, they thought the terrorists were transferring them to another location. “However, when we boarded a plane, accompanied by the UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, we breathed a sigh of relief and realized that our sufferings had ended,” they said.
Education Minister Ahmed Al-Issa, who was at the forefront of the delegation to welcome the two teachers, said he and the whole country is relieved and happy about their release. He said the ministry will honor the two for their bravery.
The Saudi ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Al-Jaber hailed the efforts of the government of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman in securing the release of the teachers. “All Saudi citizens were safely evacuated from Yemen after the coup in that country.”
