Walkways for Blink to be build in Saudi Arabia
Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, who is also adviser to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, has approved a project to establish dedicated and special walkways for the blind and visually impaired people in Makkah, Jeddah and Taif.
The announcement in this regard was made during a meeting of Prince Khaled with Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz Al-Hamdan, National Gallery adviser; Ayesha Natto, a member of the board of directors of Ebsar Foundation; and Haitham bin Abdul Aziz Al-Sabeel, member of Ebsar; on Saturday.
Natto, the first woman member of a charitable organization, told Arab News that it was Haitham’s idea to provide a safe and secure place for the blind and visually impaired people to socialize with other members of society.
“We first discussed the matter with the Jeddah municipality and selected a 2,000-meter walkway area with sound effects and other latest equipment,” said Natto.
Prince Khaled, however, suggested that such tracks should be built in three major cities of Jeddah and Makkah and Taif.
“We are very glad with Haitham’s idea and will implement it first in three cities and later in the rest of the Kingdom. We want the youth to get involved in all the development projects in the Kingdom.”
According to statistics, there are 285 million visually impaired people worldwide, out of which almost 39 million lost their vision because of accidents. Around 246 million have poor vision, 19 million children are visually impaired and 12 million children suffer from poor vision because of different reasons.
