Jeddah municipality beats back land grabbers
The Jeddah municipality and governorate have taken drastic measures to free 4.6 million square meters of government land from encroachment.
Hani Abu Ras, the mayor of Jeddah, said that the municipality has foiled attempts and put all their efforts into maintaining and stopping encroachment on government land.
He said the South Sub-municipality has managed to foil a series of infringements on government land in multiple locations in an area that fell under the jurisdiction of the branch municipality of South Jeddah. “We will continue our strenuous efforts to protect government land from encroachments,” he said.
Mohammed Al-Zahrani, chief of the South Jeddah municipality, said that with the participation of the committee of land control and municipal police they removed encroachments from almost 3 million square meters of land in the southern industrial city area.
He said they removed tents and demolished walls that were made of iron and zinc at around 450 locations.
Al-Zahrani said the municipality also removed almost 90 warehouses that were constructed illegally in an area of about 150,000 square meters. Fifteen irregular warehouses were also removed on the northern side of Harmain Street covering an area of 25 000 square meters. Cars and trucks encroaching on government land, were removed at 13 locations in the Rehaily area.
He said that the municipality recently foiled a plan to grab half a million square meters of land belonging to the Ministry of Housing.
