Saudi security officers, in cooperation of their Qatari counterparts, have thwarted attempts by drug peddlers to bring around 2.7 million amphetamine pills into the Kingdom.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on Sunday, the criminals were planning to smuggle the contraband into Saudi Arabia through Qatar. “The action was taken in two security operations.”

The suspects have been handed over to the competent authorities, the ministry said, without specifying the number of those arrested in the operations.

Meanwhile, the Customs department at the King Fahd Causeway recently foiled an attempt to smuggle into the Kingdom 14 bottles of wine hidden under the thobe of a man.

Dheif Allah Al-Otaibi, director-general of King Fahd Causeway Customs, said that the officials searched a vehicle after noticing its driver’s suspicious behavior. “A body search of the driver revealed the wine bottles, which were fixed under his thobe using the adhesive tape,” he said.
