Nazaha nails corrupt notaries

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (Nazaha) has charged a number of notaries public and officials of the Ministry of Agriculture in Al-Muzahmiyah region of Riyadh province with corruption and asked the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution (BIP) to carry out an investigation prior to sending them to court.

Nazaha spokesman Abdul Rahman Bin Ahmed Al-Ajlan said the commission received the alert on ongoing corruption from newspaper advertisements for selling of plots of land in the region.

“Nazaha immediately suspended all land deals and asked the BIP to investigate the notaries public and the officials of the Ministry of Agriculture,” he said.

The spokesman said the interior minister approved a proposal by the commission to constitute a committee comprising representatives from the governorate and the ministries of agriculture, water and electricity and justice to investigate the case and regain any government land that might has been illegally occupied.

He said after thorough investigations, the committee was certain of the administrative corruption by some notaries public and a number of officials belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture.

On the magnitude of the corruption, the spokesman cited that a notary public had issued more than 800 land ownership deeds in a single day. He said all the land deeds issued by notaries public in Al-Muzahmiyah were suspended.
