11,000 alarms to alert residents in emergencies
The Ministry of Interior has started installing mass warning system to be used during natural calamities, industrial emergencies or war exigencies.
Some 11,000 alarms will be installed across the Kingdom, said King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology President Prince Turki Al-Saud. In case of emergencies, the system sounds three alarms: One for looming danger, one for the beginning of the danger and the third at the end of the danger.
“The study of mass warning system was recently completed and the implementation phase is ready,” said Al-Saud, adding that the system will be implemented in cooperation with the Civil Defense.
“The ministry trusts the ability of the Civil Defense to install the system. Millions of riyals will be saved by installing the system without the help of international agencies,” he said.
He also said that King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology will be overseeing the technical aspect of the system.
“The city has some of the top engineers and scientists to produce efficient equipment and devices,” said Al-Saud.
Civil Defense Director Sulaiman Al-Amrou said the alarms will be installed in all provinces, governorates, cities and villages.
The installation of the alarms has been completed in Jeddah. Installing is currently underway in Riyadh, the Eastern Province, Madinah and Tabuk in the first phase of the program. The warning system is not new to the Kingdom. The first alarms were installed in 1990. However, the Kingdom has expanded three times since then. So the system needs to be updated, said Al-Amrou.
