Addictive use of mobile phones for social networking is causing serious problems in Saudi society including traffic accidents, divorce and behavioral problems, cutting across age, gender and income, according to experts.

According to a recently published study, the reaction of motorists talking on the phone while driving is similar to those of drunk people. In addition, talking on the phone is responsible for 78 percent of fatal traffic accidents in the Kingdom. It is also more dangerous to human than firearms.

Social worker Fethiyah Al-Muhammad said phones and social media can be used effectively for business and other communication. “If there is moderate use, this does not affect the social life of a person. But if it is excessive, this can cause a great deal of tension among family members and friends, along with psychological and behavioral problems.”

Psychologist Hager Al-Saad said people also become addicted to social media if they do not have hobbies and are involved in other activities. People should become more involved in community activities and volunteer work, he said.
