Deputy crown prince steps in to bring woman in coma from US
Timely intervention by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman helped move a Saudi woman, who was declared “brain dead” in the US, to the Kingdom.
Hani Matar El-Enzi was quoted as saying by an online publication on Wednesday that his wife, Basma, suffered an asthma attack about two weeks ago and she went into a coma. “Doctors at the Providence Hospital in Portland had set a three-day deadline to remove the life support system of my wife.” The couple was on scholarship residing in Portland.
The grace period ended on Tuesday and Al-Enzi appealed to a Saudi official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs via the embassy in Washington.
The Saudi online news outlet, concerned with the affairs scholarship students, quoted Al-Enzi as saying that some companies demanded over $2 million to move his wife to the Kingdom.
Al-Enzi was pleasantly surprised when Faisal Al-Zahrani, spokesman of the Health Ministry, informed him that the deputy crown prince ordered the transfer of Basma on a medical evacuation plane to King Khalid Hospital in Hail, local media reported.
Al-Enzi conveyed his “deep gratitude” and “thanks” to the deputy crown prince for directing the quick transfer of his wife to Saudi Arabia, and described him as “A Noble Hero.”
