Youth stabs four Haia members
Four members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (Haia) were stabbed by a youth who was allegedly trying to blackmail a girl in Jeddah.
The incident happened on Tuesday night and the four officers, who sustained injuries on the hands and in the back, were admitted to King Fahd Hospital, local media reported on Wednesday.
Sources were quoted as saying that the girl had filed a report with Haia stating that she was being blackmailed and threatened with firearms by the youth.
The Haia officers started following up the case and finally laid a trap for the blackmailer. When the officers sought to arrest him, he whipped out a blunt instrument and attacked the officers. The youth was, however, nabbed.
The incident sparked an outrage on social media, with some netizens calling for Haia to be armed while others seeking exemplary punishment for the culprit.
A woman wrote on her Twitter account that if it was not for the Haia officers, corruption would have become rife in the country.
One Abdul Aziz wrote: “Before you knifed these officers, you knifed your manhood, your morals, heart and life…”
Another citizen, Mishari, said: “The existence of Haia provides security for girls and to stop and instill fear among male blackmailers… they must be there… thank you (officers).
