Employees of the Education Office in Al-Daer governorate, Jazan, where seven people were gunned down on Thursday are in a state of shock and perplexed as to what prompted the attacker — a teacher — to take such an extreme step.

The teacher, identified as Abdullah Al-Malki, has been arrested and the Interior Ministry has ruled out terror angle to the incident.

The survivors of the attack still remember the final moments of the bullets being shot at them, saying that it looked like a scene straight from a Hollywood blockbuster, local media reported on Saturday.

One of the Education Department employees, who had gone to the supermarket to buy something, was shocked to see his colleagues in a pool of blood when here returned to office, the report said, quoting him.

“The attacker had not made any demands. We don’t know why he went on a killing spree. Investigations are under way and we are waiting for the results,” Mohammed Jaber Al-Malki, director of the Educational Office, said.

“I personally never heard of anything. There might have been a problem in his school and I don’t know about it. Even the headmaster there never sought anything from this office. And we never had any problem with the teacher,” he said, adding that he fired indiscriminately.

According to reports, the teacher was showing behavioral problems for some time before he went berserk, shooting at people at the Education Office.

Hussein Salman Al-Malki, manager of the reception and exams unit in the office, said what happened resembled a horror film. “I saw my colleagues falling. The scene was horrible and painful and I still can’t believe what happened.”

Supervisor Sherif Al-Malki was also in shock. “We are completely in shock and we don’t know why somebody would do such a thing. We are still awaiting investigations,” he said.
