The Commission of the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (Haia) says its functioning is transparent and that it accepts constructive criticism.

Haia spokesman Turki bin Abdullah Al-Shilail was responding to negative reports in the media about the organization.

“Haia welcomes constructive criticism with a view to taking corrective measures,” he said. “It has appointed official spokesmen at all 13 branches and trained them in how to deal with the media in a way that serves public interests.”

Al-Shilail said Haia would continue redressing shortcomings and upgrading the level of field and administrative performance.

It urged the media to deal with such incidents with moderation and cross-check their facts with official sources.

He said Haia takes tough steps in case of defamation or publication of issues that may expose the identity of the accused.

“Haia addresses many irregularities in two ways,” he said. “First way is to deal with any case on the spot through guidance or by extracting a promise from the guilty person not to repeat the offense. Majority of irregularities falls in this category.”

Al-Shilail: “The other way is to refer the case to the competent authorities.” According to him, the number of cases in which Haia members were found to have misused their power is negligible as demonstrated by research conducted by one of the specialized institutes at Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University.
