Limits set for suspension of classes during emergencies
The Ministry of Education has exempted three disciplines of study from suspensions during emergency situations resulting from the bad weather and other problematic situations. The three disciplines include art, sports and women’s education classes.
The ministry’s plan to combat this issue involves adding one class per day for each suspension of study in order to compensate for the missing classes and to ensure the fulfilment of the study plan.
Additionally, five minutes will be deducted from each class so that the school day is not being extended too far, taking into account the circumstances and needs of parents.
The ministry noted that teachers were obliged to implement the compensation plan, and to notify the parents of all changes to classes.
The ministry has committed a team consisting of various education supervisors to follow up on the plan and to hold accountable the school principals who do not cooperate in this regard.
The ministry is now reviewing the comprehensive guide to, which explains how to deal with emergency situations arising from weather and its effects, which require speedy intervention to ensure the safety of employees, teachers and students.
The guide which will be circulated to all school, and will standardize the procedures and limit the duplication of decision making or diligences regarding factors that call for the suspension of study. Additionally, the guide is expected to determine responsibility for the decision-making process with the participation of competent authorities such as the Civil Defense and the Meteorology and Environment Protection Agency. This will relieve the burden from the school principals and give the relevant authorities the responsibility to follow up and circulate the reports.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Issa, the education minister, called on the relevant education bodies to control and standardize the study suspension procedures during his first meeting with the committee to evaluate the risks of weather and their impact on the course of study.
Majid Al-Harbi, the Director General of the security and safety department at the ministry, said that the committee emphasized the importance of controlling the study suspension procedures with the cooperation of the competent bodies, and the importance of abiding by the instructions and directions of the guide that was issued by the ministry.
