Riyadh Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar

Riyadh Gov. Prince Faisal bin Bandar has warned private hospitals that they are obliged under law to admit people if they require urgent care.

Speaking at the opening of a new part of King Khalid University Hospital, he said there was increased pressure on all hospitals because of the country’s growing population. He said there was work being done by the Health Ministry, the Riyadh Development Commission and other agencies to further develop health services.

Abdulrahman bin Moammar, executive director of the medical city, said the third phase of the expansion of King Khalid University Hospital and King Abdulaziz University Hospital, includes dentistry, an family center, Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz Center for Medical Research, the National Diabetes Center and King Fahad Center for Cardiology.

Bin Moammar said the expansion is over 80,000 square meters and is made up of eight floors, two basements, a ground floor and five upper floors. The project includes areas for radiation treatment and a device to treat tumors.

It also contains a chemotherapy unit for 30 patients and outpatients, with 100 beds, a rehabilitation center, water treatment department, organ donation center, and a center for prosthetic limbs.

There are also 32 operating rooms, two of which are for brain surgery, with devices including a MRI and CAT scan machines. The hospitalization suites are allocated for various specialties such as internal, oncology and orthopedic patients. Each floor has four suites and each suite 36 beds. The day care unit has 40 beds and 11 clinics.

He said the hospital’s capacity increased from 800 to 1,200 beds and operating rooms from 12 to 32. The capacity of the oncology center increased from 1,000 patients to 3,000 with complete diagnostic and therapeutic services, he said.
