UN adopts Saudi proposal to protect Internet users’ data

The United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force has adopted a proposal submitted by Saudi Arabia on the protection of personal data online.
The Saudi proposal discussed mechanisms to maintain investments in telecommunication infrastructure and information technology industries, and intends to enhance their strength by taking into account the economic and operational dimensions mandated by modern applications.
The UN task force also discussed common international policies linked with the Internet as well the access of people with special needs to the Internet and the main challenges facing them.
Majed Al-Mazyad, head of the council’s task force and secretary general of the National Committee for Information Technology Society, said the Kingdom has held the leading role in the task force since its establishment in 2008 and participates in meetings actively with a large number of countries.
“The council’s task force receives great interest from a number of states, particularly in terms of exchanging the views and policies that assist states in protecting the best interests of their citizens and ensuring their rights on the internet”, said Al-Mazyad.
He said the Saudi proposal seeks to explore the common international policies that successfully maintain investments in the communication and information technology sectors, in view of the many services offered through the Internet and the multi-billion investments currently shaping the industry.
