The Saudi Embassy in Vietnam uncovered a scam involving citizens who recruited housemaids in that country and sent them to work in the Kingdom at exorbitant prices.

“A number of Saudi brokers recruited domestic workers for a maximum SR2,000 each and took SR25,000 for every maid from the citizens. Some of the brokers are members of the national committee for recruitment,” local media reported on Saturday.

Dakhilallah Al-Juhani, Saudi ambassador in Hanoi, was quoted as saying that Saudi brokers had rented an apartment in Hanoi as their headquarters and indulged in malpractices.

“The brokers were fleecing citizens in the Kingdom and compounding the crisis of the domestic labor in the Kingdom,” he said.

Al-Juhani said the embassy took necessary measure to send the brokers back to the Kingdom.

He said Vietnamese domestic workers are peaceful and have proven their efficiency. “If the recruitment process progressed according to the agreement signed between the two countries, it will partly solve the crisis of recruitment of domestic worker,” he said.

“The existence of brokers was the main reason for the reluctance of Saudi citizens to recruit Vietnamese workers.”

Al-Juhani said that the number of Vietnamese house maids working in the Kingdom is 6,000 as against 16,000 male workers.

The Ministry of Labor is seeking to improve the recruitment mechanism and develop the performance of the labor offices and firms.
