The Traffic Department is carrying out a comprehensive traffic campaign to reduce violations that pose a danger to road users.

The Riyadh Traffic Department has removed 525 vehicles with old number plates from the streets of Riyadh.

The Traffic Department in Riyadh region carried out intensive campaigns on cars that carry registration plates with Arabic letters only, without English letters.

The director of the Traffic Department in Riyadh region, Maj. Gen. Dr. Mohammed Al-Baqami, explained that the Traffic Department is carrying out a comprehensive traffic campaign to reduce violations that pose a danger to road users.

This comes in implementation of the directive of the public security director.

Al-Baqami stressed that plates with only Arabic letters and numbers are no longer in use and their use on cars will be a violation of the system. He noted that vehicle owners should visit the traffic section to renew their expired car registration and request a change for the old plates. He warned that any vehicle that does not carry a plate with both Arabic and English letters and numbers will be seized and penalties will be imposed.

In June last year, the Riyadh Traffic Department announced that the old number plated cars will be considered not road worthy.

The Traffic Department strongly urges all car owners to ensure their current number plates are valid. Old number plates, which are now being considered as obsolete, are the ones which have only Arabic letters and numbers on them.

Any car out on the road which has been fitted with these old number plates will be considered in violation of the traffic code which will result in a fine being imposed on the owner.

The new number plates, which have three letters and four digits in both Arabic and English, are considered valid and any cars with such plates do not have to get them updated. An official from the traffic administration said that the owners of vehicles with old number plates should immediately replace their old number plates with new ones.

“The process is not at all costly as it only costs SR100, and additionally it does not require any paper work to be filled out, hence not taking up too much time either,” he said.

He added that in the case of renewal, all the prerequisites of the process must be completed. These prerequisites include vehicle inspection, insurance and completely paying off all previous traffic tickets which may have been issued on that number plate.

The official urged the car owners of those vehicles with expired plates to immediately get in touch with the traffic administration. He stated the sooner people do this, the better it will be for this initiative.
