Turkey ‘needs exec presidency for stability’

An executive presidential system would be more suitable for stability and reforms in Turkey, Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek said on Friday, as it would override coalition governments.

“An executive presidential system is definitely more suitable to avoid leaving Turkey in the hands of coalitions and falling behind in the race for economic development,” Simsek told the state-run Anadolu Agency in an interview that was broadcast live.

The ruling AK Party clawed back a majority in a general election last November, a triumph for Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose ambition for stronger presidential powers rests on the AKP controlling parliament.

Erdogan cast the outcome as a vote for stability after months of uncertainty, but opponents fear it will only fuel the hunger for power of a leader they say has grown increasingly authoritarian.
