A nine-year-old Egyptian girl was killed after being attacked by a leopard that escaped from a wildlife farm in a village near the outskirts of southern Cairo.

The leopard reportedly mauled Amani Mohamed Fadeel – attacking her neck – on Monday night while she was carrying her infant sibling on their way home, residents told Al Arabiya.net.

The leopard pounced at the girl and attacked her, but did not harm the infant, the witnesses added.

The villagers succeeded in saving the infant and attempted to stop the leopard by hurling stones.

Fadeel died at the hospital despite attempts by rescue services to save her.

The leopard was shot by security forces who tracked the predator until it reached the farm of its owner.

The farm owner, who was later arrested and will undergo investigation, claimed he used the leopard as a pet.
