Bahrain has jailed a local man and a Thai woman to five years behind bars for attempting to smuggle drugs into the kingdom, local media has reported.

The defendants are said to have smuggled the drugs by hiding them inside the handles of their bags and shipping them into the country.

Following a tip-off by the anti-narcotic department at the Ministry of Information led to the discovery of the drugs, after which the defendants were arrested.

Both were also fined $8,000 (BD 3,000) each. The Thai woman also received an additional six months’ jail sentence after she failed a drug test.

In 2014, Al Arabiya News Channel documented the efforts of Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior in the arrest and capture of one of the most active drug cartels in the Gulf during a six-month mission.
