Oman receives 10 prisoners from Guantanamo

Protesters gather in front of the US Supreme Court to mark 15 years since the first prisoners were brought to the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on January 11, 2017 in Washington, DC.

Oman on Monday received 10 inmates from the US military detention center at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, the sultanate’s foreign ministry said on Monday.

It did not disclose the nationality of the prisoners who would reside in the country on a temporary basis, in a move that comes in the closing days of US President Barack Obama’s tenure.

The latest transfers would leave the number of Guantanamo detainees at 45, based on figures the Pentagon issued on January 6.
