Egyptian legendary retired footballer Mohamed Abou Treika could have returned to Cairo to take part in his father’s burial without facing arrest, Egypt’s Interior Ministry spokesperson said.

General Tareq Atteya told local website youm7.com that the ministry has no orders to capture Abou Treika upon arrival to Egypt.

“If he had returned to Egypt, he would have been allowed to enter the country like any other Egyptian citizen,” Atteya said.

The former Al-Ahly star was in Qatar for his work as a pundit when he was earlier informed of the news of his father’s death.

An Egyptian court had earlier put him on a watch list and froze his financial assets frozen, as faces charges of aiding the banned Muslim Brotherhood group.

Fearing possible arrest, Abou Treika decided not to return to Egypt for his father’s burial ceremony.
