Syrian opposition adamant that an elected body drafts the country’s constitution

The Syrian opposition delegation to Geneva rejects drafting a constitution if no assembly is elected to formulate it, sources told Al-Arabiya.

Commenting on UN mediator Staffan de Mistura’s proposal, which he submitted to the Syrian opposition last week, sources told Al-Arabiya that the Syrian opposition delegation said on Monday it is not possible to draft the country’s constitution without an elected constituent assembly.

Sources added that the drafted constitution will not be approved without holding a popular referendum.

Meanwhile, the Syrian opposition delegation is expected to meet with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov later on Tuesday to discuss the latest developments of the Geneva 4 talks.
