Sri Lankan school students excel at sports meet
The Sri Lankan International School of Jeddah (SLISJ) held its inter-house sports meet on Friday at the Waad Academy school grounds.
School Principal Basheer Rizvi highlighted the importance of co-curricular activities in educational institutions, and said they allow students to exhibit their talent in athletics.
The event began with the hoisting of the school and house flags, followed by the oath-taking ceremony by the house captains and vice captains. Sri Lankan Acting Consul General U.L.M Niyas was the chief guest.
The evening’s proceedings included several sports activities for students, a colorful drill display by girls from the three houses (Blue, Red and Yellow) and a march past performance by the children.
Students also took part in a fancy dress parade. Nada Najimudeen dressed as a paper doll, Zayan Thashreek (Stormtrooper from Star Wars) and Nehma Nafeel (Mother Teresa) won the first three places respectively.
School Chairman Mohamed Ilyas said he was happy to have conducted the sports meet after almost a decade, adding that he hopes it would become an everlasting memory in the students’ educational journey.
“On behalf of the board of management, I would like to express my gratitude to the principal, staff, parents and well-wishers who made this event successful,” he said.
The three participating houses were also judged for their efforts and creativity in house decorations by the chief guest and dignitaries.
The prize for the Best House Decoration went to Red.
Best Drill Display and March Past performances were awarded to Blue, ultimately making them the winners of the entire championship. Red was the runner-up.
The event came to a close with the distribution of medals and trophies to the winners followed by a friendly football match played by the boys from the graduating batch of the school.
