Russian parliamentary official: Saudi Arabia key partner in combating terror
A top Russian parliamentary delegation arrived in Saudi Arabia on Saturday on a three-day visit, the Russian TASS news agency reported.
Valentina Matviyenko, the chairperson of the federation council which is the Russian parliament’s upper house, said ahead of the visit that the Saudi kingdom is a partner in combating terrorism, adding that cooperating with it guarantees security in the region.
She said that during her talks with Saudi partners, she will voice the importance of uniting efforts to fight terrorism, achieve regional stability and resolve conflicts.
Talks between the two parties are important considering that Saudi Arabia’s and Moscow’s stances do not match in terms of several affairs such as specifying Bashar al-Assad’s fate in Syria.
Saudi Arabia and Russia have held several meetings to discuss the situation in Syria. The most prominent meeting was that of Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July 2015. This is in addition to several meetings held between Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
