UN is seeking truce in Yemen before Ramadan

The United Nations is looking into a proposal to reach a truce in Yemen before the holy month of Ramadan.


:: UN envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said on Sunday that the United Nations is looking into a proposal to reach a truce in Yemen before the holy month of Ramadan.

He added that a ceasefire will therefore pave way to resume peace talks between the warring parties.

The envoy made this statement ahead of the 17th Doha Forum.

Meanwhile, Oman’s foreign minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah told his Yemeni counterpart Abdulmalik al-Mekhlafi during a phone call on Sunday that his country stands by Yemen and legitimacy led by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.

Mekhlafi commended Oman’s stances in support of Yemen and reiterated the government’s interest in enhancing bilateral cooperation.

Also on Sunday, Mekhlafi spoke with his Bahraini counterpart Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa on the phone and voiced the importance of confronting “Iranian interferences in Bahrain’s and Yemen’s internal affairs.”
