UN chief says meetings with India, Pakistan PM can help resolve Kashmir dispute
:: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has suggested that meetings with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi can help resolve the ongoing conflict in Kashmir.
Kashmir has been a center of regional tension between both the countries since their 1947 partition. Pakistan’s English newspaper, Dawn, quoted Guterres as saying that he has been regularly meeting with both countries’ leaders since he took office in January.
He said this during a press conference in New York at the UN headquarters on Tuesday. Gueterres said he hoped to facilitate discussion and conversation between both the countries.
The UN Secretary General was asked about his level of involvement in the India and Pakistan Kashmir dispute, to which Guterres answered: “Why do you think I met three times the prime minister of Pakistan and two times the prime minister of India. For someone accused of doing nothing it is quite a number of meetings”.
