Tillerson: No place for Assad in unified, whole Syria

The top US diplomat spoke to reporters after meeting UN Special Envoy Staffan De Mistura in Geneva.

:: The United States wants a whole and unified Syria with no role for incumbent Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters on Thursday.

Tillerson added that “the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end and the only issue is how that can be brought about”

He said that he reaffirmed the US commitment to the revival of the Geneva Peace Process for Syria in his meeting with De Mistura who is reporting shortly to the UN Security Council

“I do not see Syria as a triumph for Iran in the defeat of ISIS,” he said, “Rather, Iran has taken advantage of the situation”.

Tillerson further said that the only reason Syrian forces have been successful was because of the air support they received from Russia
