Turkey: We are not bound by US sanctions on Iran

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu talks at a press conference.

:: Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday that his country has informed US officials that it opposes US sanctions against Iran and that they were not obliged to implement them.

“We have told them we will not join these sanctions. We buy oil from Iran and we purchase it in proper conditions. What is the other option?” said Cavusoglu after a recent visit by US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing Marshall Billingslea to Ankara last week.

A US delegation visited Turkey last week for talks with Ankara on sanctions against Iran and Tehran’s terror activities in the region.
