Muslim World League chief inaugurates relief organization’s emergency center
:: The secretary-general of the Muslim World League, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, inaugurated the Emergency Center of the International Organization for Relief, Welfare and Development (IORWD) at the organization’s headquarters in Jeddah on Sunday.
The center will provide the latest updates and reports issued by specialized bodies such as the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and other agencies working in the emergency sector.
Al-Issa was briefed during the ceremony by IORWD’s Director General Dr. Abdul Aziz Ahmed Sarhan about the center’s role and duties in coping with disasters and providing the needs of all affected countries.
“The center aims to make the organization a reference for humanitarian work and the first choice of donors. It also aims to implement development programs and projects by monitoring emergency situations and redress the response to alleviate the impact of crises and disasters on affected societies in the main sectors of the emergency,” Sarhan noted.
“The center had taken part in warning observatories and will establish a database on what to do in cases of emergency for each office. This will facilitate the liaison between the external office and the parties providing disaster information,” he said. “The center will be sending a voluntary emergency team to monitor and assess the needs and support the office in setting an emergency response plan.”
Al-Issa expressed his thanks for the exerted efforts, noting that the IORWD is carrying out its relief, care and development related tasks around the world according to professionally planned objectives and programs.
“The organization has taken very significant steps in the service of all those affected and the needy around the world regardless of their ethnic and religious affiliation, which comes in line with the teachings of Islam,” he added.
